Controlled Risks
We will encounter many different scenarios while in the community with the individuals we support. It is important to allow them to take assessed risks and experience new things, as long as they are not harmful to themselves or others.
• It is important to allow the dignity of risk. This allows them to fail, but then to be encouraged to continue trying to be successful at the task they are trying to accomplish. By helping to allow them to control their failure, it will help to foster their success.
• Many people have phobia of various different things in the world. For some it’s bridges, others may be scared of heights, or some may be scared of deep water. A great therapeutic technique is controlled exposure. By exposing a person to their phobia in small, controlled doses, it allows them to overcome their fear.
